I had to write a short essay on what it means to be sociologically mindful, and what I thought of Michael Schwalbe’s three sociological tenets, specifically the idea of all human beings being intertwined and what that says about society. I also had to come up with a metaphor that explained this idea of interconnectedness in a simple way. I used the metaphor of a spiderweb; if you pull at one strand, the whole web moves. To me, this represented the way the actions of one person, or strand, impacts all of society, or the web. I think this assignment addressed Interpersonal Skills because even though I didn’t have to actually use Interpersonal Skills to do the assignment, I learned more about how to hone and refine those skills. I’m most proud of my spiderweb metaphor. A lot of the metaphors other people were coming up with involved things where one impacts the whole, but not because of actual, physical contact. I wanted my metaphor to physically show interconnectedness, and I think a spiderweb did a good job with that. I improved upon my Interpersonal Skills because even though I didn’t use them, I learned more about how to use them in a productive way. The most difficult part of this assignment was thinking of a way to talk about Schwalbe’s tenets without just restating them. It took a while to come up with my own ideas about the tenets rather than just repeating what they said in a new way. If I could redo this assignment, I would do it earlier, before too many other people posted their essays, because seeing everyone else’s made it a lot harder to come up with original ideas about the content we were discussing. It relates to what I learned in the past because I’ve done a lot of projects that involved me using my Interpersonal Skills, but not many where I learned about using those skills. I can apply this to future learning because now I know more about how to apply Interpersonal Skills, and well, so next time I have an assignment where I need to use those skills, I’m more educated on it.
