Description of Work/Assignment: I had to write an essay about a place that holds a lot of emotion or memories for me. The focus of the essay was to use descriptions and imagery to make the reader feel like they're actually there. I wrote about the multi-story escalator at Ala Moana Convention Center. It's a place that has a lot of happy memories, since the convention center is where I go to attend dance competitions, but it's also a terrifying memory because that escalator is what made me scared of escalators.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? I used Communication Skills because I had to convey the fear I felt when facing the escalator, and that's hard to get across in writing.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? I'm most proud of my use of metaphors in this essay. I described the escalator as a monster and the beautifully designed convention center as a glass cage, trapping me in with the escalator.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment? I improved my Communication Skills in this assignment because I don't normally write about negative emotions, especially fear, and this was new for me.
What was most difficult about completing this task? The most difficult part of this essay was making sure my reader knew where they were and the memories associated with this place while still staying focused on describing the place, not telling a story.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different? If I could redo this essay, I would spend more time revising it. I kind of left revision to the last minute and I think that if I spent more time on that part, the essay would of been more polished.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? This relates to what I've learned in the past because I've always tried to convey strong emotions in my writing but this is the first time it really worked.
How can you apply this to future learning? I can apply this to future learning by remembering how it felt to write about such a strong emotion and putting some of that emotion into my future essays.
