In English class we did a Socratic Seminar for Of Mice and Men. A Socratic Seminar is a formal way to discuss a text and its main ideas. Some of the topics we discussed were racism, sexism, poverty, and social hierarchy. I was frustrated because when we came to a choice between another social hierarchy question and a sexism question, many of the boys booed the sexism question, even though me and my friends had been waiting to talk about feminism and sexism the whole time. We didn't get to discuss the issues I had been looking forward to talking about, which was really disappointing. We used Communication Skills for this assignment because we had to follow the rules of the seminar while still getting our points across. We had to be polite and wait our turn, but when we did speak, we had to find a way to eloquently make ourselves heard. No one wanted to listen to an angry rant. I think the seminar turned out to be very successful. Aside from not getting to share my thoughts on sexism, we had some good exchanges and made some interesting points. The Socratic Seminar was really fun and I hope we do it again.
