I had to create a model of an atom (I was assigned Ag, or silver). It had to include representations of protons, electrons, and neutrons, and of each energy level. I used embroidery hoops for my energy levels, two different colors of beads for my neutrons and protons, and googly eyes for my electrons
This project addressed my Financial Literacy skills because I had to figure out how to get all my materials without spending a ton of money. I was originally going to use puffballs for my protons, neutrons, and electrons, but all the packs I found were really expensive and had way more puffballs than I needed. So, I went home and looked at what I had already and used that instead. I did have to buy the embroidery hoops, but by not buying all of my materials, I saved money. I’m most proud of my protons and neutrons because it took a while to find enough of a single bead color to represent each one. I really didn’t want to have to buy more beads, but it took a very long time to find all the beads. I improved my Financial Literacy because I would normally just buy all new materials for a project, but this time I tried to spend less money, and it worked out fine. The most difficult part of this project was finding a way to suspend it. I used fishing line because I didn’t want the suspension to take away from the project itself, but it was really stiff and hard to work with, so I had to try a couple different ways of hanging my model before it worked. If I could restart this project, I would assemble the energy levels around the nucleus, rather than building the energy levels and then trying to get the nucleus into the middle, because that took forever and messed up my nucleus a bit. This relates to my past learning because I usually buy brand new materials for projects and end up with more materials than I need. This time, I used what I already had instead. I can apply this to future projects because next time I have a project assigned, I can use whatever materials I have on hand, instead of buying all new stuff. |
