For this assignment, I had to research five different nonprofits on Maui, what I would do if I volunteered there, and what I could bring to the nonprofit. I researched Maui Humane Society, Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Maui Friends of the Library, Hawaiian Lands Trust, and Calvary Chapel Food Pantry. This was meant to prepare me for the next assignment, which would involve actually volunteering at one of the nonprofits I researched. This assignment strengthened my Civic Literacy and Engagement skills because I spent time learning about all the different people making an effort to improve our community, and thinking about how I could engage with them. I’m most proud of the fact that I found nonprofits that addressed things I was actually interested in. For example, the MACC is focused on improving the community through art, and as a dancer, I felt a personal connection to that. My Civic Literacy skills were improved because through this project, I learned more about our community and the various nonprofits working to help the people in it. The most difficult part of this task actually ended up being the part I was most proud of. It was really hard to find good nonprofits that no one else was researching and that I had a real interest in. If I could start over, I would try to find nonprofits that are still open despite the pandemic. Almost all of the groups I researched are closed right now, and this limited my options for the next assignment, where I had to actually volunteer somewhere. This related to what I have learned in the past because I’ve done research on nonprofit organizations before, but this was the first assignment that required me to look at local nonprofits. I can apply this to future learning because now I know more about local nonprofits, so if I ever have to do volunteer work again for school, I already know of some places where I’d like to volunteer.
